How BLDC Fans work? Why they are different from ordinary ones?

A few years ago, there was a phenomenal transition of LED bulbs from incandescent bulbs due to their feature of less power consumption. It was more a revolution than just another technological advancement because, in less power consumption, the same number of lumens to be achieved. Ceiling fans are also heading for such a transition. BLDC Fan is one of the new revolutionaries in this industry. A couple of years later, all old and inefficient induction motor fans will be put back by intelligent and efficient BLDC fans.

What are BLDC Fans?

BLDC fans are those in which BLDC motors are utilized in replacement of standard induction motors. BLDC motors can reduce power consumption by up to 65% as compared to ordinary induction motors.

A BLDC fan's lifespan is also more than an ordinary ceiling fan as there is no heat generated in the BLDC motor; hence, it increases ceiling fan bearings' lifespan. Additionally, there are very few chances for winding failure due to the high thickness of the copper wire used in the winding.

The structure of the BLDC fan consists of:

BLDC Motors and its applications on Ceiling Fans

Brushless Direct Current Motor (BLDC) is a synchronous motor that is powered by DC electric source. The motor converts electrical energy into rotational (mechanical) energy.

All motors have three parts:

  1. Stator - The stationary object
  2. Rotor - The rotating object
  3. Shaft - The rod connecting a motor to the application

The above parts are present with few modifications based on the application or the power supply. DC motors are the simplest of all other motors; thus, it is easy to comprehend it's working. In the rotor, a permanent magnet is used in BLDC fans, while Copper windings are used in the stator, which produces magnetic flux when an electric current is passed through it.

When two similar polarities, north, and south, are placed on the rotor and stator, the magnetic force impels the rotor to rotational movements. To make continuous rotational movement in the rotor, we need to change the polarity in the stator.

Thus, every time the same contradiction occurs on both the rotor and stator, this helps in the rotor's continuous rotation. An electronic drive is used for constant change in the polarity in the stator.

BLDC Drive:

In the BLDC drive, major components are used:

SMPS: SMPS is used to convert ac supply into dc supply.Microcontroller: Microcontroller is used to receive the input data from the remote control to give the inverter's output data accordingly.Inverter: Once the signals are received from the microcontroller inverter drives them to the motor.

How are BLDC fans different from the current wave of ordinary ceiling fans?
In simpler terms, BLDC working principle is that when the fan is switched on, the SMPS converts the AC supply to the DC supply. Thus, microcontroller receives signals from the remote control, and accordingly, the microcontroller sends those signals to the inverter, and then the inverter drives the BLDC motor.: SMPS is used to convert ac supply into dc supply.
